The Pays Barrois, with 60,000 inhabitants, 100 communes, and 3 community entities in the Meuse department, is developing the No. 52 greenway through the Pôle d’Equilibre Territorial et Rural (PETR). This cycle route, using an existing track along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, aims to encourage cycling and increase active mobility. To measure the project’s success and justify the investment, PETR needed to collect before & after footfall data.
The Pays Barrois chose non-intrusive CityRadar counters, quick to deploy without ground sensors, which wouldn’t have survived development work. Five counters were installed at locks along the canal, powered by solar panels or public lighting and connected to the 4G network for automatic data collection. This data will help monitor cycling increases and promote greater use of active transport.
