Press release, Stockholm, Sweden August 27, 2020
TagMaster, the leading supplier of advanced sensor systems for Smart Cities within Traffic and Rail, has through its American subsidiary Sensys Networks been awarded the ITE Transportation Achievement Award for the development and installation of GiveMeGreen! – a mobile app that makes it possible to detect bicyclists as they approach an intersection. Sensys Networks receives the award together with the city of Santa Clara, California, where GiveMeGreen! was first implemented. Sensys Networks has also received an order from the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, regarding implementation of GiveMeGreen! at nine of the city’s intersections.
GiveMeGreen! is a free smartphone application, developed by Sensys Networks, which identifies bicyclists and scooter riders as they approach an intersection to facilitate and shorten waiting for the green light. The app was launched in 2019 and is implemented in Santa Clarita, California, which has been involved in developing the application.
With the GiveMeGreen! app downloaded into the phone, the bicyclist or scooter driver is detected about 90 meters before an intersection with traffic lights. The signal system is activated so that the user gets the green light as soon as possible. This means that the bicyclist or scooter driver does not have to go to a pole to press a button to get the green light, which improves traffic flow while increasing safety.
GiveMeGreen! has attracted lots of attention and has already earlier received a number of awards. The current award is presented by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, which is an international member association for transport staff. The award also goes to the city of Santa Clarita, which has been involved in developing the app.
“The City of Santa Clarita is a city with many runners, hikers and cyclists and we are committed to increasing their safety, efficiency and convenience. The GiveMeGreen! application, combined with existing intelligent intersection technology provides a good example of how smart technology can improve safety, decrease congestion and improve the travel experience for a new genre of connected traveler”, said Santa Clarita’s Traffic Signal System Administrator Cesar Romo.
TagMaster has also received an order through Sensys Networks to implement the GiveMeGreen! application at nine of Fort Wayne’s, Indiana, intersections. Fort Wayne thus becomes the second city to use the free app as a service to its residents.
“The great interest in GiveMeGreen! is completely in line with the development we see today where bicycle traffic gets the same status in the flows as motorists. During the Corona crisis, several cities have invested heavily in bicyclists and invested more money than before in bicycle handling technology. Some cities even have adapted parts of the city to prioritize the bike”, said Jonas Svensson, CEO, TagMaster.
Sensys Networks has also recently enabled cities to offer GiveMeGreen! to pedestrians at equipped crossings, extending the efficiency and public health benefits enjoyed by bicyclists. The GiveMeGreen! app is available for free in the Apple App Store for iPhones and on Google Play for Android devices.
